SUSTAINABILITY

FOR A FAIR AND HEALTHY WORLD

For decades, social and environmental commitment has been integral to our business practices.

As a “Partner for Generation”, we prioritize not only healthy relationships in the present, but also a sustainable management of our resources for future generations. An intact climate is essential for our daily business operations.

Since 2017, we have been not only assessing our company’s CO2 footprint and offsetting it with certified climate protection projects, but also actively reducing our carbon emissions within the company. Additionally, we motivate our partners along the supply chain to implement specific reduction projects.

THE THREE PILLARS OF OUR SUCCESS

THE DIVERSITY OF SUSTAINABILITY

An intact climate is the prerequisite for our daily business. In addition to the ecological climate, this also includes a good social climate and a good working atmosphere in our company. Therefore, our sustainability concept is based on the three pillars of Environmental Protection, Social Responsibility, and Employer Responsibility. The selection of our focus topics is based on a materiality analysis conducted in 2023.

Our sustainability brochure is available for download.

OUR MEMBERSHIPS AND AWARDS

In addition to internally set targets, we commit ourselves to concrete plans and actions through participation in international initiatives. For example, we joined the Science Based Targets Initiative in 2021 and the Sustainable Initiative Fruit and Vegetables (SIFAV) in 2022.

We have been recognized multiple times for our sustainable commitment. In 2012, we received the Fairtrade Award, followed by the German Sustainability Award in 2019 and the Sustainability Heroes Award in 2021. These awards make us very proud and strengthen our determination to continue expanding our efforts in sustainability.

In accord with the
UN Sustainable Development Goals

With our daily actions and a lot of passion, we are committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In short we focus on:

WASTE AND RESOURCES ACTION PROGRAMME

In 2023, we joined a collaborative action programme for sustainable water management in Southern Spain led by the English NGO WRAP .
Together with our producers and other companies in the food and beverage industry, we are implementing measures to preserve and protect water resources.

SCIENCE BASED TARGETS INITIATIVE

Port has been a carbon-neutral company ever since 2017. In our annual carbon footprint assessment, we do not only track the direct and indirect emissions generated by our office operations but, for the first time in 2021/22, include the indirect emissions from the upstream and downstream processes of our supply chain, too.
By joining the Science Based Targets Initiative in early 2021, we officially committed ourselves to reducing our emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 50 % by 2030 compared to 2018 levels – which means that we are actively pursuing the science-based target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and implementing specific reduction measures. SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

In January 2022, we joined the Sustainable Initiative Fruit and Vegetables (SIFAV). It represents a coalition coordinated by the IDH Foundation, comprising more than 40 stakeholders from the fruit and vegetable sector dedicated to enhancing economic, environmental, and social sustainability across the entire supply chain. The core objectives of the SIFAV 2025 strategy, which focuses on the three pillars Environment, Social Responsibility, and Due Diligence, include reduction of the ecological footprint, improvement of working conditions and fair wages, as well as enhancement of transparency and reporting. GERMAN SUSTAINABILITY AWARD

Together with local partners, we engage in building and development efforts in Peru, significantly contributing to local economic development. Our fruitful collaboration with the banana cooperative Capebosan was selected one of the TOP 3 finalists in the Corporate Partnerships category at the German Sustainability Award 2019.

SUSTAINABILITY HEROES AWARD 2021

In 2021, we were honoured with the Sustainability Heroes Award in the “Carbon Footprint” category. These awards, presented by the German Society for Sustainability and the German Society for Quality, recognize trailblazers in the field of sustainability. From over 200 applications, the best companies were selected in a total of six categories.

FAIRTRADE AWARD 2012

Mike Port began importing bananas at Fairtrade conditions during the 1990s, making him one of the first importers to bring Fairtrade products to the European market. The Fairtrade system’s ideals and standards fit well with the family-run group’s commitment to long-term, partnership-based trading relations with suppliers and social commitment in disadvantaged regions. In 2012, Port received the Fairtrade Award for his pioneering work and commitment to fair trade. You can read the whole Fairtrade story here.
