OUR SOCIAL STRATEGY

We are committed to advocating for a socially sustainable society where labour rights and human rights are respected and ensured for generations to come. To make our contribution and ensure fair wages and working conditions throughout our supply chain, we have already implemented various measures.

OUR SOCIAL FOCUS AREAS

SOCIAL STANDARDS

Achieving adequate working conditions in our entire supply chain requires all products traded by us to be certified according to the GlobalGAP standard. In addition, depending on the risk classification of the country of origin (based on amfori BSCI classification), the GRASP add-on module or an alternative social standard must be provided. Being a member of the Sustainability Initiative Fruit and Vegetables (SIFAV), we have also committed ourselves to implementing selected social standards for at least 90 % of the product volumes originating from countries with high and medium risk by 2026.

Fairtrade

As a pioneer in the German fruit and vegetable industry, we have been supporting fair trade under the Fairtrade label for 25 years. In addition to bananas, we now import oranges and lemons bearing this label, too. Our producers benefit from stable prices throughout the year and the additional Fairtrade premium, which enables them to sustainably expand their production, among other things. In 2023, 35 % of our bananas were Fairtrade certified.

Living wage

Ensuring fair remuneration for all stakeholders along the supply chain also involves the concept of Living Wage, which is why we have been documenting the level of wages and other compensation at various banana producers since 2022. Currently, living wages are paid at 83 % of the production facilities we have audited. Producers who do not yet fully meet this requirement have already introduced measures to close the wage gap. Together with one of our customers, we are currently implementing a project developed within the framework of our SIFAV membership, the aim of which is to close the wage gap at a producer in the Dominican Republic.
Our overall objective is to ensure and demonstrate that the wage gaps will have been closed in all our production facilities by 2030.
